    What metrics are reported?

The SCSA-based sperm DNA Fragmentation test measures your DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI):

    • <15% DFI: Excellent to Good sperm DNA integrity (Natural conception likely).
    • 15-25% DFI: Good to Fair sperm DNA integrity (May take longer to conceive)
    • 25-40% DFI: Fair to Poor sperm DNA integrity (Reduced chances of natural conception)
    • ≥40% DFI: Very Poor sperm DNA integrity (Natural conception unlikely, reduce DFI where possible, assisted reproduction recommended)

High DNA Stainability (HDS fraction) is also measured

    • Levels in the > 25% High DNA Stainability (HDS) range are considered negative for pregnancy outcome.

The statistically significant DNA Damage Score (Sperm DNA Fragmentation Index - DFI) threshold for subfertility has been established at > 25 %. When % DFI is above 25%, current literature suggests that the patient either try to reduce the DFI by medical intervention or change of lifestyle, or skipping IUI and go on to IVF/ICSI for greatest success.

Please note, sperm DNA fragmentation can be affected by certain medications, increased length of abstinence, febrile illness, heat exposure, poor lifestyle, advanced age etc. as well as clinical conditions such as varicocele and infection.

4,000+ people trust Mojo's Sperm Analysis tests

    Alex Wortley

    Verified customer

I found the Mojo experience seamless from start to finish, it's night and day when compared to an in clinic experience and cheaper too. I took this test to reassess existing issue I already knew I had, just to check where i'm at ahead of a potential second fertility journey.

    Verified customer

A really convenient and much more comfortable way to check in on my sperm health. I felt more relaxed using this kit than going to a sperm clinic and was much happier with how I received my sperm results. Highly recommend as a way to manage and check in on your sperm health.

My friend and I were curious about our fertility, it's something every guy jokes about when they are younger but we thought let's actually get tested. Mojo was the no-brainer solution to doing it. I think this kind of basic health insight should be a standard practice for all men.

    Sperm DNA fragmentation:

    • Breaks in DNA strands within sperm cells
    • Measures genetic integrity of sperm
    • Can significantly impact male fertility
    • High levels associated with:
      • Delayed conception
      • Recurrent miscarriages
      • Failed IUI/IVF treatments
    • Can affect men with normal sperm count, motility, and morphology
    • Provides insights into unexplained infertility
    • Helps guide appropriate fertility treatments

DNA fragmentation can significantly impact fertility, even in men with otherwise normal semen parameters. Here's what you need to know:

    Prevalence of High DNA Fragmentation:

    • Affects 11% of men with normal semen parameters
    • Impacts up to 39% of men with abnormal semen parameters

Potential Consequences of High DNA Fragmentation:

    • Reduced natural conception rates
    • Increased risk of miscarriage
    • Lower success rates with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
    • Potential developmental issues in embryos

    Routes for Treatment:

The good news is that 40-70% of DNA fragmentation-related fertility issues are potentially solvable with lifestyle improvements and medical intervention. This highlights the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment.

The SCSA-based Sperm DNA Fragmentation Test is highly recommended for:

    • Couples struggling with unexplained infertility trying to conceive for over a year
    • Couples experiencing recurrent miscarriages
    • Those with poor embryo quality during IVF
    • Men with clinical varicocele
    • Men after varicocele repair
    • Men over 40 years of age
    • Men with a history of cancer or those on certain medications
    • Men with unhealthy lifestyle habits (e.g., smoking) or a BMI over 30
    • Men facing unexplained male infertility despite normal semen analysis

This test is crucial for identifying underlying issues that may not be detected through standard semen parameters.

The Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay (SCSA) is recognised globally as one of most standardised assays in sperm DNA testing.

    Here is why:

    • Comprehensive Analysis: Measures both DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) and High DNA Stainable (HDS) fraction
    • High standardisation: Low variability in the procedure and comparability among different labs worldwide
    • Clear Clinical Relevance: Results directly linked to pregnancy outcomes:
      • <15% DFI: Excellent to good
      • 15% to <25% DFI: Good to fair
      • 25% to <40% DFI: Fair to poor
      • ≥40% DFI: Very poor
    • Unexplained Infertility Insights: Helps identify possible causes of infertility
    • Rigorous Process: ISO accredited, CE marked test, UK samples processed at TDL Andrology (London), measured at University of Kent
    • Globally Trusted: 100's of publications on SCSA-based assay - used worldwide
    • Advanced Technology: The SCSA-based test is a rapid, non-biased flow cytometer machine measurement providing robust statistical data with high precision and repeatability

Due to the high standardisation, results are globally comparable.

The SCSA-based Sperm DNA Fragmentation test provides the UK's most standardised and low-cost sperm DNA fragmentation analysis, empowering informed fertility decisions.
